ABOUT USMy name is Lorelei and I am Siren Pomeranians. I live in Maryland with my husband Dharmesh and our wonderful dogs. "Siren" is my choice of a kennel name as it is based on the fact that my name Lorelei comes from my German ancestry where on the River Rhine in Germany there is a large rock formation that divides the river. The water that flows past the river is much more rapid than anywhere else on the river. Legend has it that the beautiful nymph/siren Lorelei stood on top of that rock and with her beauty and mesmerizing singing voice, she stunned the boatmen and their boats would crash into the rocks and they would all drown. It is also the name of my production company where we do web production and so it was a natural choice as my kennel name. It all started in 2004. I bought my own home in 2003 and I had a lovely fenced in yard right next to a national park - so naturally, I needed a dog. I have always liked small dogs, probably because I grew up with larger dogs. We had Coonhounds, Beagles, Dalmatians and the like. Anything my Dad could take hunting. So I researched all of the small breeds and knew from the first moment I saw them that I wanted a Pomeranian. The Poms were small, but cocky and I was in love with their hair. My story is not unlike a lot of dog fanciers. I know I have heard this story at least a dozen times, so it appears as though this is our initiation rights to get into this fantastic club. Through all of my research on the breed it never occurred to me to research breeders. Having the patience of a four-year-old on Christmas morning, I immediately started making phone calls. The first woman to get back to me had two puppies and was in the mountains of North Carolina on the Tennessee boarder. Dharmesh and I made the 9 hour drive to her town. She instructed us to call her when we were close and she would give us directions to her house. When we called from about 20 minutes away she told us that she would come down "off the mountain" and meet us in the grocery store parking lot so we did not have to navigate the difficult drive to her place. In this parking lot she showed me two adorable Pom puppies I fell in love and bought both of them. One was a black puppy and the other was a cream sable - both males. We went back to the hotel a few towns away and quickly realized these poor puppies were covered in fleas and had horrible diarrhea. Back out to the local drug store to buy flea shampoo. We gave them baths and tried to keep them as calm as possible. We named them Onyx and Sienna. Back home, a day later, I realized that something was not right with Sienna. I took him to the vet and to make a long story short $2300 and 4 weeks later he died at 16 weeks of age of congestive heart failure from a level 5 heart murmur out of a possible 6 scale. I contacted the breeder and she never returned my calls or emails. I had no idea that a human being could be so cold and callous to sell someone a puppy that they had to have known was sick and now not return my calls. I am not a naive person by any stretch of the imagination, but I figured someone breeding these cute dogs had to be a good person at their core. Wow, was I wrong. Onyx turned out to be a 15 pound Pomeranian when full grown. This breeder swore to me that each of the parents were 5 lbs and he should get to be no more than that. We love him dearly and he now has the important job of being the protector of the Poms when they go out into the yard. Now I had this devistating situation, and I had a Pom puppy who was lonely and missed his brother. I then went online and found the Pomeranian Club of Greater Baltimore. I called the first number on the list and no one was home. I then called the second number and Sue Berney answered the phone. I explained to her my situation and that I was looking for a playmate for my puppy. She just so happened to have a male Pom that she brought home from Carol Galavich in Ohio for a friend of hers. However the friends son had a horrible allergic reaction to the dog and they had to give him back. Sue was going to ship him back to Ohio, but I happened to call. We made a trip to Sue's the next day and not only did I fall in love with the puppy who would become Pixie's Crimson Kisses (Crimson) but I fell in love with what Poms are supposed to look like, Sue, her home, her kennel and most of all - her dogs. Sue asked if I wanted to attend a fun match another club was having in 4 weeks. I was so excited. She gave me a show lead, some instructions and sent me on my way. In April there was a show at Timonium. This was my first time ever attending a dog show. I remember feeling so confused about what all of these breeds were doing together, and the rings, and the people, and how they ran around the ring. I was just trying to focus on finding out where I was supposed to go that I didn't even have the concentration to try to figure out what they were doing. I still remember what a foreign feeling it was to me to see all of the same dog standing around the ring, running around the ring, all in unison like it was some choregraphed dance. I finally found Sue and the rest of the group. I didn't have a crate, I didn't have a grooming bag, I had no idea what I was doing. I showed Crimson in the puppy class and I got 2nd out of 3 dogs - only because the other dog wouldn't walk around the ring. When that ribbon and toy were handed to me, I was bit by the bug and hard. Later that day when I returned home, I am pretty sure I spent several hundred dollars on getting brushes and grooming tools and leads and anything else I could think of. I was going to show Crimson! Sue then invited me to attend the show down at the Charles County Fairground. I got my entries in on time, and headed down with Onyx and Crimson. Onyx just came along for the ride. Sue and Donna Lynn Wright had their motor homes parked way down on the other end of the field from the main grounds. We were secluded from everyone else, but it was really nice. Donna and I had a chance to get to know each other and I had such a great time hanging out with them. I even won my first ribbon - Reserve Winners Dog. I was crying after he gave me the ribbon and I gave him a hug. I had no idea about ring etiquette but he seemed just fine with my excitement and the hug. It is now almost three years later and I now am a member of the American Pomeranian Club, the Cooresponding Secretary (2 terms) and Co-Rescue Coordinator of the Pomeranian Club of Greater Baltimore, I have 8 dogs, a motor home (with a custom aluminum rack I had built to house 6 dogs in the space of one swivel chair in the RV) to take to the shows. I almost finished a Chinese Crested (needed 4 singles), got my "pet" pom pointed with some help and finished Sue's bitch CH. Pixie's Luv at First Bite D'Suber with two majors and 23 points. =) I have a video feature on Animal Planet (click on Dog Fancy Diaries) when I was first starting out that is about the dog shows. I have opened and closed a dog boutique, and have also dealt with Coccidia, Giardia, Worms, Lung Worms, three lost litters, and two dogs whose health failed at 9 months of age. I have certainly has some great success in my short time, but Donna says that I have had all the bad things that happen in usually 10 years happen in just two.. so hopefully my luck will change and now I will have 8 years of great success. Heres to hoping. =) As mentioned I am one of the Co-Rescue Coordinators for the Pomeranian Club of Greater Baltimore with Beverly Allen who is also a member of the club and has been into Poms as long as I have. We have re-homed several dogs in the last 6 or so months or so and it has been a really rewarding experience for us both. I know that there are a ton of dogs out there that don't have homes and are put to sleep every day. I have a moral dilemma with breeding for this very reason. Therefore I do rescue to balance out the fact that I am into the dog fancy and want to continue to better the lines of Poms as well as do as much as I can to educate the general public about dogs, breeds, puppy mills, rescue and responsible pet ownership. I have also been interested into getting into more dog campaign/advertising projects. It all started when I had the pleasure of helping Janet York of Piccadil King Charles Cavalier Spaniels with her ad campaign for the ranked Can. Ch. & AKC Ch. Fredrik V.H. Lamslag of Piccadil, RN, CGC. Here is a sample of one of her ads. All of the ads are based on popular movie titles from any year. I know she has done King Kong, Charlie's Angels, Lord of the Rings (get it?), West Side Story, Wizard of Oz, and many more. I helped out on getting quotes from movies and photo ideas together for her first set of ads. She has done very well with her ads and they are certainly unique and memorable. Recently, I am part of a fantastic team of Joanne Rusk, Sue Berney, Annette Rister, Charlotte Creed and Donna Lynn Wright in advertisting Patriot's The Hitman (Veni). We have decided to do something that doesn't appear to have been done yet in the dog show world and create Veni his very own website at www.thehitman.info. Considering the team that is supporting this dog in his quest for his Championship, and then plans to be a Special, we wanted a neutral place where only he is being featured. It has turned out really well and we have created an entire campaign for this dog before he even stepped into the ring. I have had so much fun with this endeavor from doing the ads in The Pom Reader to designing and updating his site. Be sure to check it out. After a year break of showing in the ring, I headed back in the ring and have been doing fairly well. We now have both of Clover's majors and some extra points, some more points on Chili and at the end of August 2007 we will be heading to the Nationals in Texas with our first home bred boy Siren's First Impression - Ichi. Click here to see his site. If you have any questions about Pomeranian's in general, rescue questions, or anything else, please feel free to write me. Thank you for taking the time to read a bit about us. |
